Project Overview:

Over the past several years, the SENSEable City Laboratory at Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has carried out extensive research into the use of real-time data generated by urban networks and systems. The digital revolution has layered a vast system of cameras, communication devices, microcontrollers and sensors over our environment, enabling entirely new ways to imagine, monitor, and understand our cities. These systems have a value that goes beyond their original purpose: the digital exhaust of cellular networks reveals social and economic patterns, tracking systems highlight global material flows, and digitally managed transportation fleets address a city’s mobility. Several of the Lab’s projects specifically involve research into innovative ways of visualizing large data sets and real-time data feeds and results of projects have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Singapore Art Museum, the Venice Biennale and other major exhibition venues. The SENSEable City research group in SMART is seeking exceptional candidates to fill a position involved in the development of the datacollider (www.datacollider.io), a web-based tool for creating interactive data visualizations from Big Data.

This position will be based at SMART in Singapore. Candidates should be independent and self-motivated, yet able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. A successful candidate should have an excellent background in Web-related software design and programming. The responsibilities and requirements for the role are listed below:


Responsibilities:

  • Helping to plan and implement the web-based user interface of the DATACOLLIDER
  • Implementing data visualizations using various libraries such as d3.js, three.js and cesium.js
  • Working in close collaboration with user interface designers and Backend Engineers
  • Ability to quickly understand, learn and apply new programming languages or frameworks
  • Rapid prototyping and evaluation of interactive user interface components

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Bachelor degree and two to three years of related work experience
  • Expert-level front-end web development skills (HTML5, CSS3, Javascript)
  • Familiarity with core libraries used in the project: backbone.js, marionette.js, require.js, jquery, d3.js and three.js
  • Expert knowledge of Javascript design patterns and front-end application architecture
  • An appreciation of user experience and visual design principles

Preferred skills

  • Experience with WebGL
  • Sound experience in the process of visualizing data both in static as well as dynamic form
  • Knowledge of other programming languages such as Java, Objective-C, or Python
  • Familiarity with design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite
  • Relevant skills for interpreting, analyzing, and pre-processing data
  • A basic knowledge of GIS or the mapping, and use of geographic point and polygon location information
